Each CPAP or BiPAP unit is unique in function and capabilities. Your therapist will provide onsite training to insure your comfort in the operation of your machine. You will also receive manufacture operator manuals with your unit and mask of choice.
Cleaning of your equipment is very important. The following is our recommended cleaning procedure for all units.
Mask or Nasal Pillows
Wash daily with a mild, lotion free, non Anti Bacterial soap. Dish washing soap is good if not containing lotions or oils for hand softening. Allow to dry then reassemble. Morning cleaning is recommended to allow adequate drying. Soak mask in a 1:3 ration of vinegar to water weakly. Soak for one hour to insure disinfection of mask. Do not use alcohol or bleach products on your mask.
Headgear
Headgear can be hand washed and air dried. This should also be performed in the morning to allow adequate drying. Do not wash in a washing machine or dry in a dryer.
Hose
The CPAP/BiPap hose is not as prone to grow bacteria as components that touch the skin. We feel that weekly washing is adequate. Failure to wash weekly will result in mold and fungus problems. Simply place warm water in the hose and a few drops of your detergent. While holding your thumbs over both ends, vigorously shake the hose to produce a scrubbing effect. Rinse the hose with clear water until clear. Coil hose in a medium size pot and place a saucer over hose to keep flat on the bottom of the pot. Pour same vinegar and water solution over hose to disinfect and allow to soak for one hour.
Filters
Each unit has different suggestions regarding the cleaning and/or replacement of filters. Respironics has a washable foam filter that should be washed weekly using mild detergent. Never use wet filters. The optional disposable high filtration filter should be changed monthly or sooner if extremely dusty conditions. Resmed units generally are replaced every six months and are not washable. Please refer to your owners manual for specific guidelines regarding your filter care.
Humidifier Chamber
Humidifier chambers should be washed daily with mild detergent. Some humidifier chambers are dishwasher safe. Check with your owners manual to determine if safe. Weekly soaking in 1:3 ratio of vinegar and water is also recommended for disinfection. If using the diswasher for washing, this step may be eliminated as dishwasher disinfect and clean.
Regular replacement of all disposable parts is recommended to insure clean and fully functional equipment. Call us if you are interested in our supply replacement program!
